WPM typing speed test

Teaching a child to type? Bumpy Keys starts with two keys. Free to start.

Type for 1, 3 or 5 minutes and get your speed in words per minute, with your accuracy beside it. The clock starts on your first key.

How this WPM test works

  1. Pick a length. 1 minute for a quick check, 3 or 5 minutes for a steadier number.
  2. Pick what to type. Sentences, Stories for a paragraph typing test, or plain Words with no capitals or punctuation.
  3. Type the lit key. The clock starts on your first right key. A wrong key does not move you forward, so every mistake costs a little time, the way it does in real typing.
  4. Read your result. Words per minute, the share of your presses that were right, and up to three stars for accuracy.

What is WPM?

WPM stands for words per minute. Because real words differ in length, typing tests count every five keys as one word. Type 200 right keys in a minute and your speed is 40 words per minute. To do the sum yourself, use the WPM calculator.

Some tests report two numbers: a raw speed that counts every press, and a net speed that takes mistakes off. This test only moves on when the right key is pressed, so the one number you get is already a net speed.
