Typing test for kids

Want a better score? The game teaches every key. 100 lessons, free to start.

Pick how long and what to type. The clock starts on your first right key, and your puppy runs while you type.

How the test works

  1. Pick a time. 30 seconds, 1 minute or 2 minutes.
  2. Pick what to type. Home row for beginners, all letters for words, sentences with capitals and periods, or numbers.
  3. Type the lit key. The clock starts when you do. A wrong key does not move you on, so find the right one and keep going.
  4. See your result. Words a minute, how many of your keys were right, and up to three stars.

What the numbers tell you

NumberWhat it tells you
Words a minuteHow fast you typed. Every five right keys count as one word, which is how typing tests everywhere count it. You may see it written as WPM.
Keys rightHow careful you were. 95% means 95 of every 100 presses were the right key.
StarsThree stars when every key was right, two for a nearly clean test, one for finishing. Stars never depend on speed.

How fast should a child type?

There is no single right number. Schools set different goals, and children start at different times. Ask your child's teacher if the school has a target. At home, the fair comparison is this week against last week, never one child against another.

Accuracy comes first. A child who types slowly with the right fingers will speed up with practice. A child who types fast with two fingers has to unlearn it later.

Before you start

  • Sit so the keyboard is easy to reach. Wrists straight, shoulders loose.
  • Find F and J. Rest your pointer fingers on the two keys with bumps.
  • Pick the right challenge. If the keyboard is new, choose Home row. It only uses keys in the middle row.
  • One try is plenty. A test shows where you are. Practice is what moves the number.

After the test

Write the score on the printable progress chart, or mark a big day with a certificate. Then build the skill: the practice page works on one group of keys at a time, and the full game has 100 lessons that start with two keys.

Older or faster? The typing speed test runs for 1, 3 or 5 minutes with stories to type. To see how a number compares with a large study, try is my WPM good?

For a whole class

Every student can take the test at once on Chromebooks, laptops or iPads. There are no accounts, and no scores leave the device, so there is nothing to collect or consent to. Teachers can also request free classroom codes for the full game.

Questions

Is the typing test free?

Yes. There are no ads and nothing to sign up for.

Is there a home row typing test?

Yes. Choose Home row above the game. The test then uses only keys from the middle row of letters.

Is there a number typing test?

Yes. Choose Numbers above the game for a timed test on the number row.

Is this a typing quiz or a typing challenge?

It is a short timed typing test. For a quick challenge, try typing the alphabet against the clock or racing the dinosaur in the typing race.

What does WPM stand for?

Words per minute. Every five right keys count as one word, so 50 right keys in a minute is 10 words a minute.

Are scores saved?

No. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere. Write the score down if you want to keep it.

Why does a wrong key not move me forward?

So the test matches how the game teaches: find the right key, then go on. Wrong presses still count against your keys right.

Does it work on a Chromebook?

Yes. It runs in the browser on Chromebooks, Windows laptops, Macs and iPads.
