Typing race

Want more races? The game has twenty worlds of racers. Free to start.

Type the lit key to run. The dinosaur starts when you do, so pick how fast it goes and see who reaches the flag first.

How the race works

  1. Pick the other racer's speed. Gentle, steady or speedy.
  2. Press the first key. Both racers set off together.
  3. Every right key is a step. A wrong key costs a moment, so careful typing wins races.
  4. Reach the flag. You see your words a minute, your slips and your stars, then race again with new words.

Which speed to pick

SpeedThe dinosaur typesPick it when
Gentle6 words a minuteYou are still finding the keys.
Steady12 words a minuteYou know where most letters are.
Speedy20 words a minuteYou can type words without looking down much.

Win a race comfortably and it is time to move up a speed. Losing by a nose is good practice too.

Why racing helps with typing

A race gives each key a reason. Children who would not sit through a drill will type the same letters happily to see a puppy cross the line. In Bumpy Keys the whole way of learning works like this: every key moves the racer, in lessons as well as races.

More racing in the full game

The game starts with two free racers, the puppy and the dinosaur, and all 100 lessons are free with them. An optional one-time purchase adds all twenty worlds. You can play it in your browser or download it free for iPad and Mac.

Questions

Is the typing race free?

Yes. There are no ads and nothing to sign up for.

Who am I racing?

A dinosaur that types at the speed you pick: 6, 12 or 20 words a minute. It is not another person.

What words do I type?

Friendly, simple words from the Bumpy Keys lessons, using all 26 letters. Each race has new ones.

Does it work without a keyboard?

Yes. On a tablet without a keyboard, on-screen keys appear. A real keyboard is better practice.
