Pick a level beside the heading. Each puzzle hides twelve sight words from that list: tap the first letter of a word, then its last letter.
A new twelve words every time
Each Dolch list is longer than one puzzle can hold, so every puzzle takes twelve words from the level you picked. Press "New puzzle" for twelve more. Words of one or two letters, such as "a", "I" and "to", are left out of the puzzles: there would be too many of them in the grid to tell which one was meant.
| Level | Words on the list | Words of three letters or more | The full list |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-primer | 40 | 29 | Pre-primer sight words |
| Primer | 52 | 44 | Primer sight words |
| First grade | 41 | 37 | First grade sight words |
| Second grade | 47 | 45 | Second grade sight words |
| Third grade | 40 | 39 | Third grade sight words |
| Nouns | 96 | 96 | Dolch nouns |
For a kindergarten word search, choose Pre-primer or Primer: those are the two Dolch lists that come before first grade.
How to play
- Find a word from the list in the letters.
- Tap its first letter, then its last letter. With a mouse you can also press on the first letter and let go on the last.
- The word lights up and is crossed off the list. A wrong pair does nothing: try again.
- Find them all. There is no clock. "New puzzle" picks twelve more words from the level.
Easy, Medium or Hard
| Choice | How the words run |
|---|---|
| Easy | Across and down |
| Medium | Across, down and corner to corner |
| Hard | All of those, forwards or backwards |
Print it with the answer key
Press Print for two pages: the puzzle, with a line for a name, and its answer key. They fit US Letter and A4 paper. Each press of "New puzzle" makes a different sheet with a different twelve words.
How the grid is kept clean
The empty squares are filled with letters picked at random. Before a puzzle is shown, the page reads every row, column and diagonal in both directions, and changes any square that helps spell a word we would not show a child. A hidden word that would spell such a word backwards is only ever placed forwards. The puzzle is made in your browser: nothing is saved or sent.
