Sight word games

Sight words have their own lessons in Bumpy Keys. Free to start.

Pick a level beside the heading, then type each sight word as it comes up. Twelve words a lap, in a new order every time.

How to play

  1. Pick a level. Pre-primer is the first Dolch list and Third grade is the last. Nouns is the separate list of naming words.
  2. Read the word, then type it. The lit key is the next letter, and the hands show which finger to use.
  3. A wrong key waits. Nothing is lost. The game moves on when the right key is pressed.
  4. Finish the lap. One star for finishing, two for a nearly clean lap, three for every key right. Speed is not counted.

The game types plain small words of two letters or more, so "a", "I" and "don't" are on the lists and not in the game. For kindergarten, the kindergarten sight words page puts the first two lists together.

What kind of game this is

It is a typing game. A child sees the word and presses its letters in order, so every word is finished with the right spelling. It does not say the word aloud, and it does not check that a child can read it: a grown-up listening does that. The sight word checklist is a sheet for keeping track.

Questions

Is the sight word game free?

Yes. There are no ads and nothing to sign up for.

Which sight words does it use?

The Dolch lists: pre-primer, primer, first grade, second grade, third grade and the nouns. Each level has its own page with every word on it.

Is there a sight word game for kindergarten?

Choose Pre-primer or Primer. Those are the two Dolch lists that come before first grade. Schools choose their own lists, so ask the teacher which words the class is on.

Does it work on an iPad or a Chromebook?

Yes. It runs in the browser. It is best with a keyboard; without one, keys appear on the screen.
