Spelling practice

For practice that builds from two keys, Bumpy Keys has 100 lessons. Free to start.

Type or paste this week's spelling words into the box, press the button, and they become the words in the game.

How to use it

  1. Put in your words. Type or paste them into the box above the game, with a space, a comma or a new line between them. Up to 40 words.
  2. Press "Use these words". The game starts again with your list.
  3. Type each word as it comes up. The lit key is the next letter, and the hands show which finger to use. A wrong letter waits for the right one.
  4. Keep going. A lap is up to twelve words: a shorter list is one lap. Every word on the list gets its turn before any comes round again.

Why type spelling words?

  • Every letter has to be right, in order. The game does not move on until the right letter is pressed, so a word is always finished correctly.
  • It is the same list as the school's. The words are whatever the teacher sent home this week.
  • It adds a second way to practice. Use it beside writing the words out by hand.

What the box accepts

Plain words made of letters, from 2 to 14 letters long. Capitals become small letters, and an apostrophe is dropped, so "don't" is typed as "dont". Numbers and other marks are ignored. A word with an accent or a hyphen is left out, and so is a word on the game's blocked list. The corner of the game says how many were left out.

Your list is not saved and is not sent to us or to anyone else. Close the page and it is gone, so keep the list somewhere if you will want it tomorrow.

Ready for a test?

The spelling test takes the same list, covers each word, and asks for it from memory. For a plan from Monday to the test, see ways to practice spelling words.

Ready-made word lists

For common words already sorted by level, see the sight word lists: Pre-primer sight words · Primer sight words · Kindergarten sight words · First grade sight words · Second grade sight words · Third grade sight words.

For a class

Put the week's list on the board and each student can type it in on a Chromebook or an iPad. There are no accounts, and nothing typed leaves the device. Teachers can request free classroom codes for the full game.

Questions

Is the spelling practice free?

Yes. There are no ads and nothing to sign up for.

Is my word list saved?

No. The list stays on the page until you close it. It is not saved and not sent anywhere.

How many words can I use?

Up to 40 at a time, each from 2 to 14 letters long.

Does it check the spelling?

It uses the spelling you give it: the game only moves on when the right letter is pressed. It does not correct the list itself, so check the words before you start.
