A one-minute typing check

Watch one lap. Here is what good looks like.

A typing game cannot see fingers. A grown-up beside the child can. Sit with your child for one lap, about a minute, and look for these three things. There is nothing to write down and nothing to score.

  1. Fingers rest on the home row, with the pointers on F and J.
  2. Each key gets the same finger every time.
  3. Eyes stay on the screen.

See one of the three? Say so out loud. One thing to try next lap is plenty.

At 4 to 5 a child learns where the keys are and which finger goes where. Typing with all ten fingers without looking comes later.

This page prints on one sheet: use Print in your browser. The colors are the game's finger colors, and the home row keys chart shows which finger types which key. For a first week of lessons, read how to teach a child to type.
